Data governance and data management, the choice between being rules-based or principles-based can be pivotal. There is a profound impact of embracing principles over rigid rules. The over-use of rules inevitably leads to complicated processes just to stay within the rules, rather than using principles that can be situationally and parameter driven in their use.

Data governance is not a one-time task but a mindset or lifestyle that should be embedded into the very fabric of an organization's culture. If you mow your lawn once in May, you can not expect it to look good in September. The grass will be out of control. Weeds will be reaching eye level all around the flowerbed. Not only will it not look good, it will be a fire hazard. The same applies to data governance. It is not a ‘project’, it is an embedded feature of everything the organization does. On the other hand, if it does become a part of every component of the business, the benefits will stretch well beyond the quality of the data. Data Governance can enhance every facet of the business in its push for ROI.
